Townhouse Galleries’ oriental rugs are hand knotted at the world's most famous rug weaving centers. The craftsmen use only the finest natural fibers, implementing the old world weaving skills and traditions.

Every rug is handmade with classic designs, which symbolize centuries-old weaving traditions. Each one has its own unique personality - in both design and feeling. In your home the room's lighting and the direction in which the rug lies plays a key role in its appearance.

The foundation of a carpet consists of the "warp" (vertical, from fringe to fringe) and the "weft" (horizontal, from side to side). The primary materials for carpet weaving have been the same for centuries: wool, cotton, or silk. Weavers often use hand-spun wool and vegetable dyes; sheep wool is most common, yet in more nomadic areas, goat wool is also used. In tribal weaving rug foundations are made of wool; although within larger towns and workshops, cotton or silk is used to allow smaller knots to be tied, creating a finer carpet with more intricate designs.

In addition to making your home beautiful, each rug brings with it the tradition of this craft and deserves appreciation for all the time, energy, and creativity that went into its creation.
