10 Decorating Tips Everyone Should Know
1. Do not try to force too much furniture into a small space. You do not want to over crowd a room, so be realistic about your room size. Draw out everything on graph paper if needed.
2. When hanging art work, try not to place above eye level. 60" from the floor to the center of the piece is a general rule of thumb.
3. Try not to use any single piece of art that is too small for your wall. Don't have a piece big enough? Try a grouping or come see us at Townhouse Galleries and find the perfect size.
4. Do not line up your accessories on shelves, mantles, etc... doing this gives a rigid look that is harsh and uninviting. Fix this problem by mixing sizes, color and textures, staggering and using odd numbers.
5. Try not to paint without doing a test patch. Granted those little paint samples are nice, but light can be deceiving. Since most stores now offer a complimentary small bottle, this is easier than ever.
6. Use your family treasures and pictures to show your unique personality. Your home needs to reflect your taste and lifestyle. Objects from your travels, framed children's art and family photos are all easy and affordable accessories.
7. Try to stay away from using lamps that are too small for you tables. 28" to 32" are good sizes for most nightstands and end tables. 20" to 24" is the suitable size for dressers. Exceptions will occur obviously, but this is a good general rule of thumb.
8. Embrace your homes special architectural features. So go ahead and highlight those angles, skylights, fireplaces, built-ins, etc..
9. Don't be afraid to decorate. Never leave a room undecorated due to fear. Better yet, enlist the help of a professional designer from one of our Townhouse Galleries locations.
10. Choose a key item/inspiration piece for a decorating project. Once you choose your focal piece, stick with it. Changing your mind over and over again is confusing and keep you from making progress.
