George Hepplewhite (1727-1786), Thomas Sheraton (1751-1806) and Thomas Chippendale (1718-1779) are acknowledged as the 'big three' furniture designers and makers of the 18th century, creating a uniquely British style. Many elements and theories established by them are still used in contemporary design. Despite designing a multitude of furniture types, George Hepplewhite is particularly identified with the shield back chair. Although the idea of the shield back chair pre-dates Hepplewhite, his delicate and intricate designs for these cemented his mastery of this particular style. The current chair celebrates the detailed carving, delicate proportions and the rhythm of Hepplewhite's design along with a traditional execution in period authentic materials.
